Daryl Dixon

Jack Flacco

Last week I wrote about Rick Grimes, the leader of the survivors of AMC’s The Walking Dead. This week, I thought I’d add to my Wednesday Warriors series by talking about Daryl, the pragmatist of the group. Not only does he have a way of making things work by taking the simple approach, but he’s also the character no one would want to lose if things in the series should end up going south.

Daryl Dixon Daryl Dixon

There’s a running joke on the internet, more of a meme. It goes something like this:

“Everyone makes fun of the redneck until the zombie apocalypse.”

It may seem funny, and yes, I must admit that it does strike me as humorous. But it also contains an element of truth others would rather ignore. That truth being, rednecks know a lot more about survival than the rest of us could…

Schooling In The Zombie Apocalypse

When an apocalypse breaks out, there is sure to be a vast lost in knowledge. Libraries burnt and the internet down, how will will school the new generation, in the zombie ridden streets?
Well it will be hard and many things will be lost, but not all hope is lost. For there are still teachers, students, firefighters, hunters, and many more. People who can teach their trade.

Even though teaching and learning are very important, you cannot start your school until you have a secure base. After you are well fortified, you can begin teaching. First teach your group a rough idea of what you used to do and how it can be applied to survival. After all of the adults have a good idea of everyone else’s abilities, you can start teaching the few young you may have alive, the basic tools for their survival.

Teach them with practical learning, put it to use. Need them to learn about math, have them calculate the surface area needed for a building. Hands-on learning. And now good luck, teach them all you know and have the others do so as well, an maybe someday, we could restore the world once more.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some barricade lengths to calculate.

Warning Signs That You Are About To Be Attacked Revisited

Good advice that can be applied to any apocalypse!

One of my readers asked me if I would once again address this topic so I’ll take another run at it as requested.  In order to be better prepared to protect yourself; be aware of the warning signs that usually signal that an attack by a criminal is imminent.

  • When someone invades your personal space, by standing too close, especially when there aren’t many people around.  What they are doing is closing the distance between you and them for a potential attack.
  • Asking you a question like do you have the time or do you have change for a dollar.  What they are doing is evaluating your situational awareness and sizing you up as a potential target.
  • If someone is walking towards you and their hands are hidden; especially behind their backs, your radar should be up telling you that something is wrong.
  • Coordinated motion; if you cross the street…

Keeping Yourself Safe

The following are ten important things to know when it comes to keeping yourself safe.

  1. Be situationally aware of who and what is around you.
  2. Pay attention to your gut instincts.  If something feels wrong or unsafe than it probably is wrong or unsafe.
  3. Be careful whom you trust.  Not everyone or everything is always as it appears to be.
  4. Keep your cell phone fully charged and with you.
  5. Be proficient with your self defense firearms.  They can save your life someday.
  6. Do not have a victim’s mentality or an entitlement mentality.  Instead be confident and positive about yourself and your abilities.
  7. Be prepared for the most likely scenarios which you might face and plan accordingly.
  8. Do not walk or drive in dangerous areas alone or at night.
  9. Do not let strangers latch onto you.
  10. Develop a tactical, self defense mindset.  You are your own first line of…

Top Five Melee Weapons (Zombie Apocalypse)

I have done a post before talking about which melee was better, Blunt vs. Blade so far blade is winning by one vote. Now we bring you The Top Five Melee Weapons for The Zombie Apocalypse, from worst to best.

5. Sludge Hammer
The sludge hammer is my worst pick, because it is heavy and impractical when traversing large distances, which you will probably be doing most of the time. Also, it will be too slow to attack several zombies at the same time. But if you have nothing else, go for it.

4. Metal Baseball Bat
At first this may seem like the best solution, it’s easy to come by and decently effective. It will probably dent or break after multiple zombies. Still not the worst option though.

3. Hatchet
Hatchets are good, they can be used as a blade or a blunt. They can be used to chop wood and pound in nails. The downside to this tool, is the reach, it is very limited. However, it is still worthy of the top three spot because of the multiple uses and for its great use for indoors.

2. A Pike
The obvious downside to this weapon is the when in use indoors and close spaces. Many pike can be made out of home materials. Such as a broom handle or a pipe. For the end use an ice pick, knife or other such things. Take your handle and duct tape your head to it. The better materials the better your weapon will be. Only use if you have quality materials on hand.

1. A Machete
At about 15 to 21 inches, this takes both lengths and adds into a good middle ranged weapon. And to add that they are very common, this makes it my number one pick. However, be wary when buying a machete. Do your research before picking one up.
